Summary of Case

"A local reporter of Daily Nawa-e-Waqt, Rana Nadeem Saleem was slapped during the coverage of clashes between two sectarian communities Shia and Sunni during the rally of Sunni Tehreek Counsel for the holiday of First Muharram on July 7, 2023 in Shahdadpur, Sindh. Irshad Zafar Bukhari, President of Shahdadpur Press Club told PPF that Saleem was assigned to cover the rally of Sunni Tehreek committee on July 7, 2023 and there during the rally there was a clash between SHia and Sunni committee and Saleem was beaten up the violent mob of the Shia committee during the coverage of rally. However one of the prominent leaders of the Shia community came to the Shahdadpur Press Club after the day of incident and he apologized on the behalf of the mob and he will soon take the other people of the mob also to apologize with the reporter. “If they will come and apologize with Saleem, the matter will be resolved and if they will not come to the Press Club by tomorrow we will condemn the issue and will produce the press release on this” Bukhari added. Speaking to PPF, Rana Nadeem Saleem recalled the incident and said that he was slapped and physically tortured by the violent mob of the Shia community during the coverage of the rally. ‘ “I was just making the videos and waiting for the right moment to record the opinion of some people during the rally, but during the clash they attacked me, however I was just making the videos along with my fellow reporter Shoaib Islam” he added. According to Saleem, after the incident he went to City Police Station to register the First Information Report; however the SHO insisted on resolving the matter over a verbal apology. General Secretary of Shahdad Pur Press Club, Abbas Sand told PPF that Saleem was beaten up the violent mob of Shia Community around 10 to 15 days ago he was involved in the fight against the rally of community “Ehl-e-Tashee” and he belongs to the community of “Sipah-e-Sahaba”, between their rivalry he was beaten by the people around him and they snatched his phone. However the matter was not related to journalism, Sand added. "
