Summary of Case
"On March 11, Punjab police recovered the tortured body of a journalist with broken teeth, jaw, and burned face from Sohawa near the Lehri National Park and had been confirmed to be Pakpattan print journalist Tahira Nosheen Rana, working for a local Urdu-language print publication within the Sohawa district of Jhelum in Punjab’s north, approximately four hundred kilometers from Rana’s home in Pakpattan. Local police formally initiated an investigation into the incident in a First Information Report filed on March 11, 2024, at the Sohawa Police Station in District Jhelum. The case has been registered under section 302 relating to murder under Pakistan’s penal code, FIR no 82/24. Express News Pakpattan Reporter Rao Sharafat told PPF that the case is not solved and he had tried to contact her family but they were not cooperating. SHO Ehsan Butt from Sohawa Police Station told PPF that still, no arrest had happened yet as her family was not cooperating, nor was his brother, so he could not say anything. He said it was a personal matter of her family. The SHO further said that the other concerned staff are in Lahore so he couldn't provide her family's number until they return. Pakpattan Press Club General Secretary Rana Jawad Masood told PPF that this case is not related to journalism because she had some personal matter in her family so he couldn't say anything about her murder. The SHO said that the woman’s second husband had also been contacted and would join the investigation soon. He said three criminal cases were found registered against the deceased in Pakpattan and Lahore police stations while she was also a complainant and a witness in several cases. In an interview available on Facebook with a journalist in Islamabad, the deceased had stated that her second husband had already married five women and had contracted his seventh marriage after marrying her. “This is a gang very active in Lahore that lures well-settled women after building relationships with them to get financial benefits,” she had alleged in the interview. In the video, she also alleged that her husband had subjected her to assault and blackmailing after she applied for Khula. “He had also kept me hostage for four months at different places and recorded my obscene videos after intoxicating me and sent them to my family and friends”, she alleged in the video. Talking about cases registered against her, she claimed that her husband had given her cheques after faking her signatures to different people while she was kept hostage, adding his aim was to confiscate her property. She alleged that her husband had also attempted to take her life multiple times. She also claimed that her husband had made a plan to put the blame of her death on her brother and other family members. She had also sought justice and protection from the authorities. Interestingly, in another video statement recorded earlier on April 9, 2023, she had claimed that she and her husband were receiving life threats from her family members, including her brother. She had also claimed in the video that she was having property disputes with her family members. (Dawn) Pakistan Federation Union of Journalists (PFUJ) president Rana Muhammad Azeem told PPF that we still didn’t find anything in her case and police had already arrested her brother and brother-in-law. She was also not from any official organization. She was a part-time journalist, and some issues were going on in her family.
