Summary of Case
"Jahangir Hayat, a local reporter for The Business newspaper and a governing body member of the Lahore Press Club, was apprehended by police officials while covering an event at Jinnah House in Lahore. Azam Chaudhry, the president of the Lahore Press Club, informed PPF (Pakistan Press Foundation) that Jahangir Hayat was performing his duty and covering the event for his organization and his vlogs at Jinnah House on May 9, 2023. The police attempted to arrest Jahangir but failed. However, on May 17, 2023, the police harassed his family members and subjected him to physical abuse. The Lahore Press Club strongly condemned the arrest and called for a fair and expeditious investigation by the police officials. In an interview with PPF, Jahangir Hayat explained that on May 17, 2023, around 7 PM, six to seven individuals raided his house with the intention of arresting him. ""I asked them why they were arresting me and requested to see the FIR or the arrest warrants. As soon as I asked for the arrest warrants, they physically assaulted me and my family members, including my 12-year-old son. They beat me severely, resulting in the breaking of two of my teeth. When they saw that I had fainted, they also assaulted the house staff. I managed to escape from the back of my house and reached the Lahore Press Club. Since then, I have been staying at the Lahore Press Club, while the police continue to conduct regular raids on my house,"" Hayat added. ""I am uncertain about the reasons behind these raids, but I believe they are targeting me because I covered news near Zaman Park and Liberty Chowk on May 9, 2023. Although I did not cover anything for my organization, I did create a video for my YouTube channel,"" Hayat further explained. Hayat expressed his intention to consult with his legal counsel once he is able to leave the Lahore Press Club, as the police have been conducting raids on media professionals and journalists in Punjab. Jahangir Hayat currently serves as the chief reporter for The Business Lahore. Muhammad Waseem, the Chief Editor of The Business newspaper Lahore, informed PPF that he has had no contact with Hayat, and Hayat was not on coverage for the organization. The organization is unaware of any raid on his house."
