Summary of Case
On January 26, Naya Daur correspondent Moammar Qazzafi was assaulted by supporters of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and a candidate of the party, Ch. Adnan Sarwar Gorsi. The attack occurred while the Naya Daur reporters were covering Gorsi’s constituency PP-157 in Lahore. Due to disagreements during the coverage, PPP supporters allegedly physically assaulted Bukhari and damaged his camera. Bukhari told PPF that he and his reporter, Qazzafi, visited the location for coverage and allegedly observed several unusual activities. Bukhari said that women were queuing to collect forms, which gave off an impression of pre-poll rigging despite the official claim that these were forms for the Benazir Income Support Program. When Qazzafi inquired about the purpose of their gathering, the staff on-site abruptly accused them of harassing the women and initiated a physical altercation against Bukhari. The confrontation resulted in Bukhari sustaining injuries near his head and eyes, and their camera was also damaged. Following the incident, Bukhari filed a complaint at the local police station in the factory area, but the matter was eventually settled. On January 30, Ali Warsi, the TV head of Naya Daur told PPF that the Naya Daur team was present for general coverage when they engaged in verbal arguments with supporters of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). The situation escalated, leading to physical assault on Naya Daur's reporter and cameraman by PPP supporters. Warsi further revealed that despite the severity of the incident, the police have been uncooperative in registering a First Information Report (FIR). Instead, the police allegedly advised Naya Daur to resolve the matter through mutual understanding, suggesting a lack of legal intervention. On January 30, the President of the Lahore Press Club Arshad Ansari clarified that Naya Daur is not affiliated with the Lahore Press Club. Additionally, he mentioned that the press club does not have the authority to take any action on behalf of Naya Daur. On January 31,2024, speaking to PPF, Bukhari said that he was allegedly attacked by supporters of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). The attack resulted in physical assault, and his camera was also reportedly broken during the altercation. Moazzam Bukhari further conveyed that individuals in the vicinity intervened and came to his aid, preventing further harm from the PPP supporters.
