Summary of Case
"The News: Police have started short-term kidnapping of journalists also, after common citizens. Muhammad Nadeem, a reporter of Daily Jang, was abducted by the CTD personnel on Monday, as kidnapping of citizens for ransom has become a routine in Karachi lately. According to details, Mohammad Nadeem was coming to his office on Monday when two motorcycle-riders abducted him and another citizen from a minibus near Cantt Mor in Frere police station precincts. They introduce themselves as the CTD officials and took the two to the CTD civil lines. The kidnappers searched Mohammad Nadeem and the citizen. However, after finding Jang press card from Nadeem’s pocket, they released him. However, they threatened him of dire consequence if he told anyone about the incident. According to Muhammad Nadeem, the other citizen abducted along with him was not released by the CTD officials. In this regard, DIG CTD Asif Ijaz Sheikh said he would conduct an inquiry into the incident. On March 11 at around 3:30 pm, Daily Jang news reporter Muhammad Nadeem was going to his office in a public bus when two men from the Crime Terrorism Department CTD abducted him from a minibus near Cantt Mor in the Frere police station precincts and took his cellphone. CTD officials transported them to the CTD civil lines while Nadeem was eventually released upon the discovery of his press credentials. No FIR was registered in this case. Muhammad Nadeem (victim), the reporter of Daily Jang, told PPF that he was traveling to the office in Ilyas Coach. On 11th March, two CTD persons named Zain ul Abideen and Kalay Khan stopped the bus and took one other passenger and him and told them that our colleague's phone was lost on this bus, so we searched for it, so we had doubts about both of you so you both have to come with us and then they took them to the CTD Civil Lines and after reaching there they asked them to allow searching of them and then Nadeem showed his [press] card and so after seeing the card they asked him to leave and then he came back. Saqib Zaheer, a staff reporter for Daily Jang, told PPF that Nadeem was going to his office in a bus, and then two men from CTD forcefully took him to CTD civil lines. Later, they released him after he showed his press card. Saeed Sarbazi, President of Karachi Press Club, told PPF that Nadeem was traveling to his office in the evening while two men from the CTD department took him to CTD Civil Lines, but later on, they released him after he showed his identity card. Further he shared the contact of Minhaj from Daily Jang. Minhaj, the chief reporter of Daily Jang, told PPF that Nadeem was traveling in a bus towards his office, and then two persons stopped the bus on cantt are premises, laid off the journalist from the bus, misbehaved with him, slapped him, and forcefully took him in an auto-rickshaw to CTD Civil Lines. Further, he shared with PPF that they checked his cellphone and released him after he showed his press card and asked him not to discuss this with anyone. Minhaj said that they talked with SSP Umer Khitab Mashwani and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Asif Ejaz Sheikh and discussed the matter. They said that this was a misunderstanding from CTD as they said that their colleague lost his cell phone on a bus, and we were in search of that. Minhaj said that they strictly demanded to suspend both the CTD personnel because of this act, and later on, they suspended both of them. Aijaz Ahmed, president of the Karachi Union of Journalists KUJ (Dastoor) told PPF that Nadeem is a resident of Korangi and was traveling from his home to his office, so the 2 CTD personnel stopped the bus and took Nadeem and another passenger to CTD Civil Lines and they suddenly released him after Nadeem showed his card. Further, he said that they talked to DIG and demanded to suspend both the CTD personnel, and after that, they released the notification of their suspension. Further, he asked that the press release is available on Daily Jang newspaper of 12th March."
