Summary of Case
"On 29 April 2023, a senior crime reporter Shahbaz Khan of Dunya News in Karachi was covering a fire incident in Liaquatabad when a policeman tried to stop him. The reporter said he was only doing his duty and Station House Office Liaquatabad Rashid Ali and Additional SHO Abid Shah along with three to four plainclothes men manhandled Shahbaz Khan and forcibly held him trying to take him to the police station. According to the reporter, Shah was allegedly “drunk” but so far. Medical tests of the concerned police officers have not yet been conducted. Khan later met SSP Central Maruf Usman and briefed him about the incident Usman suspended both police officials and started a departmental inquiry against them. Speaking to PPF, Khan told that on April 29, 2023, around 3:45 AM, he reached the spot of Liaquatabad number 10, to cover a fire incident that happened in a local house, where he stepped forward to collect the details and information regarding the incident but Shah, who was not in his conscious, as he was drunk and stopped Shahbaz from coverage Shah manhandled Khan as well, forwarding Shah another station house officer Rashid Ali also misbehaved with Khan and said to him “why are you moving forward”? and they arrested Khan and taken him in the police van, on this point, Khan’s other colleagues protested and got Khan out of the van. Then a colleague of Khan protested towards the Liaquatabad police station. Additionally, Khan said, after the incident, the matter was noticed by IG Sindh, Ghulam Nabi Memon and he directed SP Liaquatabad, Ayaz Khan, and SP Gulberg, Jahan Dad to inquire about the matter. However, on April 30, 2023, Shah who was drunk have been suspended by SP Liaquatabad and SP Gulberg, they also suspended Rashid Ali but he did only misbehave with Khan so in the second session of the inquiry Khan forgive Ali, however, Shah suspended till date. “Khan said I welcome the immediate inquiries and notices of IG Sindh and SP, Liaquatabad for taking the matter not so lightly, and they took the action” Khan added. Speaking to PPF, the bureau chief of Dunya News Karachi, and joint secretary of Karachi Union of Journalists Talha Hashim, told that Khan was on his assignment duty on April 29, 2023, and was covering the fire incident in Liaquatabad when the police officials stopped him from coverage as Khan was the one who reached first along his team and other media organizations reached later. Additionally, he said, the police officials were drunk and they stopped Khan from coverage; however, the inquiry was launched for this case, the Station House Officer was suspended and the inquiry was led by the SP division. The matter was directly related to journalism. Saeed Sarbazi, president of Karachi press club told PPF that he is not aware of this case as Shahbaz Khan is not affiliated with Karachi press club however the club only deals with the cases which are related to the members of the club, not others."
