Summary of Case

On 24 May, 2021 reporter of Dawn News Syed Wasim beaten by SHO Saudabad Rana Haseeb and other police officials in Karachi.

Syed Wasim told PPF that he went to “Al Mumtaz Medical Complex” where someone put gun on hospital’s owner and identified himself as journalist, when he reached to the hospital he came to know that the person and the owner went to Saudabad Police Station so Wasim also went there for the updates.

As Wasim entered in the room of Station House officer (SHO) for the updates and asked the accused that from which channel he’s from as he identified himself as a journalist the SHO became aggressive and shouted on him.

SHO misbehaved me and started beating me and asked other police officials to take me out from the room, Wasim told PPF.

The Station House Officer (SHO) Saudabad police station has been removed from his position and ordered to report at the police headquarter over his involvement in beating a journalist.

The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Saqib Minhaj, East, Karachi, took notice of the incident The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gulshan conducted an inquiry against SHO which found him guilty of illegal use of his powers. Five policemen, including constable Amanullah, Javed, Zaheer, Shahbaz, and Abid, have also been dismissed. The police said that suspended policemen were involved in beating a journalist.

On May 26, 21 Bureau Chief of Dawn News told PPF that we strongly condemn the incident and demand complete inquiry. We appreciate the quick action took by police and suspended all the police officials involved in the matter.

President and Secretary Information of Karachi Union of Journalist KUJ told PPF that we strongly condemn the incident and demand fair inquiry.

Karachi Press Club (KPC) has expressed deep concern over violent acts against journalists. In a statement issued by KPC, the KPC president Fazil Jamili condemned the police actions. Jamili said that violence on journalists during their duties would not be tolerated. He demanded that those responsible for beating a journalist should be punished and dismissed.
