No FIR was registered, journalist was receiving threats from local group after he reported a news against that group

Summary of Case

"On 11 July 2021, Senior reporter of Express Newspaper Mr. Bakhtullah Jan received death threats for his news reporting.

President of Shergarh Press Club Mr. Jameel ur Rehman told PPF that recently Bakhtullah was present in a Stamp Paper works shop of Abdullah where a group of people came for stamp paper of marriage, the conversation of the groups was seemed strange to Bakhtullah so, Bakht informed police. Police came at the spot and arrested them as they was selling a girl. Bakhtullah and some other including Jameel himself reported the news of the incident in newspapers. Bakhtullah reported in Express Newspaper (news is available in soft copy). Then after the incident. on 11 July, 2021 when Bakht was on his way to his residence after finishing his office work, an unidentified armed man, who was already in ambush on the way, pointed a weapon at him in the dark of night and threatened him with life treatment and said that how you dare interfere in our matters, stay away. No FIR of the threats registered till date. He urges the authorities to ensure all kinds of protection of journalists.

Bakhtullah told PPF that people came in his area from different rural areas of Sindh and Punjab to sell young girls. He was in a shop of Stamp paper on June 21 where the conversation between two groups were seemed strange to him so He call Police. Police took action and arrested them. He reported the news of the group on June 22, 2021 in Express Newspaper. After that news some unidentified armed men stopped him on a road at night when He went outside for bringing medicines for his son and threatened him: “Stop interfering in our matters otherwise you will face consequences and we will make you our guest”. Some people also enquiring about him from his neighbors from last 3 to 4 days. He informed Shergarh press club but did not register any Application in police Station as according to Bakhtullah He was threatened many times by Taliban 3 to 4 years ago but Police never took any action so it is useless to inform Police. But if PPF will suggest then I will register FIR.

District Press Club Mardan’s President Mr. Nasrullah told PPF that Bakhtullah is dear friend of him but he had not share anything with him regarding threats.

Editor of Express Newspaper from Peshawar Mr. Shahid Hameed told PPF that Bakhtullah is the area correspondent of Express newspaper but Bakhtullah did not share anything with the colleagues and Editors regarding threats. He will contact Bakhtullah and then inform PPF about the matter."
