Summary of Case

"On Tuesday, Feb 14, 2022 Sar-e-Aam’s host Iqrarul Hassan and seven members of his team were made hostage and tortured by the officials by Intelligence Bureau (IB). Hassan nominated 5 officials, all of them were later suspended.

The officials of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) viciously tortured the host and his team for exposing the corruption of an IB Inspector along with video evidence, they found an official taking money during door to door NADRA verification in a sting operation in Karachi’s Orangi area, ARY News reported.

Iqrarul Hassan and team members were immediately transferred to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, after medical treatment they are now out of danger.

Senior anchorperson, Waseem Badami posted a video of the fellow and explained Iqrar’s health as that one of his shoulders is dislocated, rib is fractured and he had an abnormal ECG report as he was given electric shocks.

Talking to ARY News, Iqrarul Hassan said he and his team were stripped naked, beaten and electric shocks were inflicted on the delicate parts of their bodies on the orders of Director IB Syed Rizwan.

Meanwhile, Intelligence Bureau Deputy Director General Iftikhar Nabi Tunio has taken an immediate notice of the torture and suspended five officials of the IB including IG Director, Syed Rizwan, Mehboob Ali, Inam Ali, Rajat Ali and Khawar.

During conversation with PPF President Karachi press club, Fazil Jamili strongly condemned the torture on media team and demanded independent probe in this regard.

Ammad Yousaf, Director News ARY strongly condemned the torture on team Sar-e-Aam. He appreciated the immediate response from Prime Minister’s house.

“We demand inquiry against responsible officials, just suspension is not a justice”, Ammad added.

No complain for legal action is yet registered.

The Association of the Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND) condemned the incident, saying that “it is not acceptable to take out anger on a journalist’s investigative story; however, any cowardly action cannot stop a media from carrying out its duties”.

Sar-e-Aam is an investigative crime show of ARY News, the team and host were subjected to misstatements by officials and citizens several times in past as well.
