Summary of Case

"Daily Jahan-e-Pakistan Bureau Chief of Fateh Jung, district Hassan Abdal Khalid Armani aged 65, was detained and physically tortured by City Police Station’s Station House Officer Faisal Khattak and ASP Ishaq Jawad on August 3, 2023, for posting news against them on his Facebook page. On August 19, Speaking to PPF, Khalid Armani said that on August 3 he shared a post on his Facebook page regarding the incompetence of Attock police officials, according to Armani his source from the Assistant Commissioner’s office called him and told him about the vandalism of police officials and illegal land grabbing of police officials on government land. “I posted facts regarding the news of incompetence of police officials on August 3 which his source told him to report, after sharing the post on the same day around 2 o'clock my source called me outside the office of Assistant Commissioner Fateh Jung, Sana Ram’s office when I reached there, police officials manhandled me and on gunpoint, they detained me in a police van and took me to Police Station Fateh Jung where they manhandled and tortured me” Armani added. After reaching the Police Station, House Officer Faisal Khatak misbehaved with him and snatched his mobile phone, after deleting the videos and posts from his Facebook ID they returned the phone to Armani and forced fully make a video of him and asked him to say few words in Attock police support. On August 3, after returning from the police station, Armani informed Daily Jahan-e-Pakistan Incharge Amir Ali about the incident to which Ali advised Armani to consult with Deputy Police Officer Attock Dr. Sardar Ghias Gul Khan for registration of an FIR against SHO and ASP, on the instructions from Incharge of Daily Jahan-e-Pakistan Armani went to meet DPO on August 5 but instead of listening to him DPO told Armani that he posted misinformation on his social media account against police officials and Armani has committed a serious crime and advised Armani to remain silent on this issue or else he would be responsible for the serious consequences. After this Armani submitted a petition for 22-A against ASP and SHO City Police station Hassan Abdal on August 8, the petition was submitted in Additional Session Judge Court Fateh Jang with his legal counsel. On August 19 legal representative of Armani, Chaudhry Anwar Waraich shared with PPF that on August 7 Armani went to the office of DPO but he did not go there as a journalist he went to DPO as a local activist and requested him to register a case against the SHO and ASP who misbehaved with Armani on August 3, but he did not listen to Armani and advised him to remain silent, after that on August 8, in Additional Session Court Fateh Jung in the presence of Armani the legal team of Armani submitted the petition in court to register the case against SHO and ASP for the charges of 22-A. “First court proceeding took place on August 15 in which Additional Session Court’s Judge, Syed Najaf Haider Kazmi summoned SHO and ASP in the court and advised them to comment on the incident, in the first court proceeding neither SHO nor ASP appeared in court however on August 18, court proceeded second hearing and again waited for hours for the comments of SHO and ASP and they did not appear this time also” Waraich added. The next court proceeding will be on August 23 and the judge summoned SHO and ASP again with strict notice. In charge of Daily Jahan-e-Pakistan, Amir Ali shared with PPF that Armani informed him about the incident but he posted a post on his social media on August 3 after which he went to DPO on his instructions and then he reported the news in the newspaper, and now the court proceedings are ongoing and he is pursuing the matter in court. Rawalpindi Islamabad Union of Journalists strongly condemned the torture of police with Armani in a condemning statement, RIUJ President Abid Abbasi, General Secretary Tariq Ali Virk, and other duty bearers demanded from authorities to ensure a prompt investigation on this matter and to take strict action against the SHO and ASP. Rawalpindi Union of Journalists Vice President Shahid Ajmal told PPF that the incident was reported to the union around a week ago but it was a matter related to news, Ajmal is not sure about the news as he did not review his news stories or posts. Fateh Jang Press Club President Liaquat Bajouri told PPF that the Pres Club condemned the incident that happened with Armani but he did not know about the details of the incident."
