Summary of Case

On 29 Feb 2020, Mehrab Shah Afridi, reporter of Tribal News Network (TNN), received threatening phone calls by an unknown man for sharing his news reports on social media in his hometown, Landi Kotal, a tribal area of Pakistan.

According to reports, Mehrab covered a sit-in where Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) leader and Member of National Assembly (MNA) Muhammad Ali Wazir spoke to people who had gathered to protest against the killing of a resident of Landi Kotal. As soon as he uploaded the video of the speech of Wazir on the social media, he received the first phone call from Malaysia, warning him of dire consequences.

Talking to PPF, Afridi stated that he received five calls from (0060187907124) number, asking why he uploaded Wazir’s video on social media. “I also received death threats,” they use abusive language with me he added. He registered the First Information Report (FIR) at Landi Kotal Police Station against the unknown caller.

Station House Officer (SHO) at Landi Kotal Police Station Amjad Khan said that the case is being investigated and the Malaysian phone number from which the calls were received, has been sent to Peshawar to trace the caller.

Pakistan Federal Union of Journalist (PFUJ) Vice President Lala Asad Pathan requested the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to track down the caller and deal with him for making threatening phone calls to Afridi.

Landi Kotal Press Club member Ibrahim Shinwari said that Afridi’s case must be resolved as the earliest.

President Of Khyber Union Of Journalist (KUJ) told PPF that Mehrab was covering the protest organized by locals for a person killing blaming that he was killed by army officials, Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) leader and Member of National Assembly (MNA) Muhammad Ali Wazir spoke to people who had gathered to protest against the killing of a resident of Pasait Khel, Landi Kotal. Mehrab recorded his speech and uploaded on Facebook, after that he received threats from an international number .The case is still unresolved.

Ayaz Head Morer of Landi Kotal Police Station told PPF that we traced that the calls were coming from Malaysia but couldn’t investigate further that from whom, why the the person is giving threats to Mehrab as we don’t have resources to do so, for this further investigation Mehrab needs to contact FIA.

Mehrab Shah Afridi while talking to PPF told that he went to the police station fifteen days before but couldn’t get any satisfactory response as they said the case is under investigation.
