Summary of Case
On 5th Feb, 2020, Shah Nawaz Khan a correspondent of Tribal News Network (TNN), in Bara, a town in Khyber district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province was threatened and abused by policemen for making a video of a fight between them and a rickshaw driver.
Khan was covering the Kashmir Day rally on February 5 when the fight took place between the policemen and the rickshaw driver. He noticed some policemen stopped the rickshaw driver from playing his vehicle towards the rally route. When the argument turned into a fight, Khan started making video of the clash. Upon seeing Khan making a video, policemen tried to stop him from making the video. “Policemen threatened me and used abusive language. They also tried to snatch my mobile phone,” he added.
The journalists belonging to Bara strongly condemned the incident and demanded strict action against policemen.
Senior vice president of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), Shamim Shahid has strongly condemned the incident. He said that the journalists who are highlighting problems of people and inefficiencies of officials in merged tribal districts face high-handedness by the law enforcement agencies. He demanded of Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhawa Mehmood Khan and Inspector General Police Sanaullah Abbasi to take notice of the incident.
According to Peshawar based journalists the authorities have banned media reporting and use of motor bike in Bara area; therefore they don't allow journalists to enter for the purpose of coverage.
