Summary of Case

"On 17 May, 2021 Nawa-e-Waqt newspaper’s correspondent Javed Siddiqui in Dera Ghazi Khan received a threatening call from ‘Khuda Buksh Chaktani,’ head of ‘Laadi gang.’

He received a call from number “03321949871”.

The caller told that “You published news in (the) newspaper and uploaded same reports against us on social media. Stop, this, otherwise you would be killed. Additionally, your house could be destroyed through a bomb,” the caller told the journalist.

According to the journalist, the Laadi gang demanded Rs50, 00, 000 (five million rupees) as compensation. . “The gang is actively involved in the criminal activities including, kidnapping for ransom, robberies and killing etc.

“Journalist Javed Iqbal Siddiqui used to publish news against the gang annoying the gang who threatened him,” First Information Report (FIR) of the journalist has been registered.

According to FIR, “there are many facilitators of the gang in the area.”

Prime Minister Imran Khan visited South Punjab and ordered provincial government to launch operation against dacoits in the area.

On June 24, President of Dera Ghazi Khan Press Club Mr. Bakht Muhammad Khosa told PPF that the most wanted gang of Dera Ghazi Khan “Laadi Gang” is involve in threatening journalist Javed because Javed was reporting their activities to his Newspaper, the matter is really serious no one is taking any action against this gang yet even after the orders of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

On June 24, 2021 Mr. Javed Siddiqui told PPF that He used to publish news related to Laadi Gang activities in Nawai-e-Waqt Newspaper, he recieved threatening calls because of those reports. It is clear attack on freedom of expression. On 17th May, 2021. He received serious threatening call from member of Laadi Gang. Javed informed area police. After threat call they also attacked Nephew of Javed’s shop in search of Javed, where one innocent person was died and other got serious injuries.

According to Javed Police Mobile was just a road away from that spot of the attack but they did not take any action. Now, Javed left his house and his son is not going to School because of fear. His Mobile phone is on tracking, he cannot share more information as it be would be dangerous for him, he further added.

On June 24, 2021 DSP Dera Ghazi Khan Mr. Mehar Nasir told PPF that they are trying to catch the culprits by encounters. They hoped that they will resolve the matter soon. The case is still under investigation.

On June 24, 2021 Resident editor of Nawa-i-Waqt Newspaper Mr. Mian Ghaffar told PPF that initially Laadi Gang presented verbal apology to journalist but as FIR registered the police is still trying to catch the culprits.
