Summary of Case

"A local reporter of PNN News, Abdul Raheem was detained by the police officials for covering news against them, according to Freedom Network Raheem was detained on June 19, 2023, from district Khanpur of Shikarpur. On July 21, 2023, speaking to PPF, Raheem told PPF that he was called on the choky of Napa Kot in the district of Tehsil Khanpur, Shikarpur; where he was abducted and kept in custody of police officials for 26 hours and was beaten brutally by the policemen of Police Station Napa Kot on the orders of SSP Shikarpur Amjad Sheikh. Raheem told PPF that upon confirmed news from his sources, he approached Sheikh on June 18 for his statement on the matter story related to the honor killing of women in Shikarpur being done by the feudal in Shikarpur, and the act was supported by the police including Sheikh himself. Additionally, he said that in reaction to his question Sheikh asked Raheem to meet him at the mentioned Police Station, where he was taken into custody forcefully and was tortured for 26 hours. “I was then transferred to the Police Station of Lakh gate in an Alto Car” He added. According to Raheem, he allegedly said that the four people who escorted him were fabricating a fake scenario against him in a drug case “They tried to forcefully put drug packets in my pockets for which I rebelled and in return faced another brutal beating from the men this time”, Raheem told. On July 22, Police Station Lakhi Gate SHO, Manzoor Mahar told PPF that the arrest was based on Raheem posting false personal statements related to SSP Amjad Sheikh, because of which orders were circulated to arrest him. He concluded his statement that the matter was nullified in the end. He also confirmed that the arrest was made on the verbal orders of SSP Amjad Sheikh. On July 25, 2023; speaking to PPF Usman Mirza; Out Station Reporter of PNN News confirmed that SSP Amjad misbehaved on calls when Abdul Raheem approached him through the telephone 3 times, Sheikh agreed to meet him in the Napa Kot Police Station. He further mentioned that Abdul Raheem was beaten naked there. On July 26, Speaking to PPF Sodho James, former President of Shikarpur Press Club said that he is not aware of this case. On July 26, Speaking to PPF Waheed Brohi, General Secretary of Shikarpur Press Club confirmed the incident happened with Raheem and also said that the FIR of the case was not filed for this case. He further told PPF that the arrest was done on the spot and the orders circulated by Amjad Sheikh were based on verbal telephonic communications. On July 27, Speaking to PPF Lala Hassan, OSR of GNN News, told PPF that he had no information for this case and for further reference of ease he provided Waheed Brohi’s contact details. On July 27, Speaking to PPF Waheed Brohi, General Secretary of the Press Club of Shikarpur told PPF that he is well aware of Raheem’s case. Brohi allegedly said that due to the social media posts related to the honor killing Sheikh triggered and he put fake charges on Raheem and detained him over verbal orders. He also said that Sheikhs used to receive bribes for hiding honor killing cases and other illegal property disputes in the district. "
