Summary of Case
"Geo News correspondent Kashif Mushtaq and his cameraman Zeeshan Iqbal got hurt during the coverage of the anti-encroachment operation in Karachi on March 15, 2023. Shahadat Baloch, another correspondent of Aaj News got injured while covering the protest by the locals has informed PPF that Supreme Court has ordered to start the anti-encroachment operation in Gulistan-e-Jauhar one of the prominent area of Karachi, when the operation started the local residents of Gulistan-e-Jauhar started violating the peace of the area and our assignment editor ordered us to reach the spot for the coverage. “We went there. I went there with all the safety equipment I had my helmet on and we even wore the jacket on the second day of coverage. The locals attacked the media professionals and they even targeted me and my cameraman. They broke my phone, apple watch and DSNG” Mushtaq added. Mushtaq said police are investigating the matter and they are searching for the attackers. Saeed Sarbazi, president of Karachi press club has informed PPF there were not only the reporters of Geo news however there were other reporters as well who got hurt including the reporter of Aaj News. Rana Javaid, correspondent of Geo News told PPF that the incident happened a couple of days ago but he did not have any further information of the incident, Rana suggested PPF to speak with the journalists directly in this matter. Shahadat Baloch, another correspondent of Aaj News who got injured while covering the protest by the locals has informed PPF that the attack on the journalists was deliberate as the journalists were continuously covering the operation. The FIR was registered by the ASI Muharram Ali in the police station Gulistan-e-Jauhar. FIR number was 177/2023. FIR was registered under section 147/148/149/504/382 and 337. "
