Summary of Case

"In Sep 2021, senior economy journalist Rana Abrar Khalid, currently running a YouTube channel named “Economy News Rana Abrar Khalid” faced some suspicious activities around him.

In conversation with PPF Rana Abrar told that on Sep 20, 2021 Senior journalists of economy beat called Rana in Islamabad Press Club and shared that officials of Intelligence Bureau of Pakistan was investigating me a few days ago and that IB officials went to them and asked them this question specifically about me, as Who is Rana Abrar? He has support of which party? What is his financial status?”

On Sep 28, 2021 three suspicious women claiming health workers of National Institute of Health Islamabad Pakistan (NIH) without any official card had searched his house under the guise of a dengue survey and took photographs of Abrar’s home.

One of the lady was confirming about the activities of Abrar from his mother.when Abrar was sleeping around 10:00 AM as, when your son goes out? At what time he usually back to home? , any political activity of your son? Although there was no dengue survey in my street or in the entire area where I live. By which, my doubt has turned into the belief that the suspicious women came to my house either to steal a specific file which is related to my appeal to Pakistan Information (PIC) or they may have come to my house to install spy equipment (bugs). My guess turned out to be wrong but when no dengue survey was held in my neighborhood, then the question becomes important as to why those women entered my house without a specific purpose, Abrar Added.

When Abrar heared the question about political party, He found it suspicious but could not take any action against them because of gender.

According to Rana Abrar the RTI he filed as Appeal No 810-12/20 Rana Abrar Khalid Vs Cabinet Division on November 23, 2020 demanding details of gift received by Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Imran Khan from foreign head of states and head of governments since 2017 is the reason behind the harassment. When the relevant department did not provide the required information so He appealed in Pakistan information Commission (PIC), the decision of PIC was in favor of journalist. In Sep 2021, Government of Pakistan approached Islamabad High Court (IHC) to stop PIC giving details of PM’s foreign gifts.

General Secretary of Pakistan Federal union of Journalist (PFUJ) Mr. Nasir Zaidi during discussion with PPF condemned the harassing of senior journalist Rana Abrar Khalid and told PPF that Abrar contacted them and shared that he is facing harassment from security agencies.

PFUJ in a statement termed the tactics used by the government and its agencies as unwanted and uncalled for. PFUJ leadership warned of serious consequences and asked for enquiry against those officials who are involved in Harassing Rana Abrar khalid.

General Secretary, Islamabad Press club, Mr. Anwar Raza condemned the harassment senior journalist Rana Abrar Khalid.

I feel insecure and helpless in the Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, at the moment, Abrar told PPF. "
