Summary of Case

"Journalist Sabir Shakir received threatening messages from an unidentified person on June 14, 2023. Sabir is not in the country these days and he is running his Youtube channel, not currently affiliated with any media organization. According to Journalism Pakistan, Shakir said he has been receiving serious threats since April 2022 and last time former Army Chief, General retired Qamar Javed Bajwa called him and threatened him after which he left Pakistan. In a tweet, Shakir claimed that recently under section charges he booked are baseless likewise in the past, he also claimed that he asked to be quiet or else he will be killed. Shakir said he has been receiving threats since April 2022 and the series of receiving threats have not ended till date, he was forcefully deported from Pakistan and he is living outside the country. Sabir expressed his intention to share his experiences of suffering with everyone once the current period of authoritarianism concludes and the judiciary gains its independence. He also expressed hope that the present military leadership would take action to resolve this matter and put an end to the vengeful practices established by the former army chief. Pakistan federal Union of Journalists and National Press Club did not know about this matter and they did not produce any press release for this case."

Press club 1: "Speaking to PPF, Myra Azam, vice president of Islamabad Press Club told that she has requested multiple times with General Secretary of National Press Club, Raja Khalil Ahmed and others to at least issue a statement in support of the journalists who have been booked under sedition charges but they are showing non-serious attitude and not ready to issue any statement. She also said the Press Club should call for a protest in this regard. Saeed Sarbazi, president of Karachi Press Club told PPF that the press club did not issue any statement as Shoiab Sheikh is not a member of the press club."
