Summary of Case
On 15 March, 2021 The Sukkur Police have registered cases under the Anti-Terrorism Act against journalists who were covering the protest for Irfan Jatoi’s controversial murder in front of the office of Additional Inspector General of Police, Sukkur SITE area Police Station.
FIR includes the names of bureau chief of Samaa TV Sahil Jogi, bureau chief of Abbtak TV Imdad Phulpoto, Rustam Indhar of daily Puchano, his son Irshad Rustam, student of Shah Latif University Khairpur and journalist Adam Shanbani.
On the complaint of Sub-Inspector Mir Hassan Shar of the SITE Police Station, the police registered a case under sections 341, 120, 121, 123, 221, 431, 114, 120-B of the Pakistan Penal Code and 11 EE and 7 ATA of Anti-Terrorism Act.
In conversation with PPF, PFUJ strongly condemn the action by Police.
On 18-Mar-21 Speaking to PPF Mr. Sahil Jogi said he and his fellow journalists were performing their professional duties and present at the place of protest for coverage of the sit-in but the Sukkur Police included their names in the case falsely.
Another nominated journalist in FIR Mr. Imdad Phulphoto told PPF that he was just covering the protest and have no idea why police had added his name to the criminal complaint.
Speaking to PPF Mr. Nazir Ahmed Mangi SHO of S.I.T.E Police Station said that protestors including journalists have chanted anti-state slogans during their protest on March 15, 2021. So, we filed FIR against 17 people misbehaving there including journalists. Investigation of this FIR has stopped till further order. They filed FIR for giving the pressure to journalist, but later released journalist and cancel FIR
On Jan 25th, 2022 speaking to PPF Mr. Sahil Jogi told PPF that after the pressure of Sukkur Journalists and PFUJ, police insured them that police will cancel FIR but they had presented challan in ATC court.
Anti terrorism court rejected the case because of invalid sections.
Local police then presented challan in session court Sukkur, where the case is still under investigation.
