Summary of Case

"On April 13, seven reporters and camera persons received minor injuries at a PTI rally in Peshawar. According to Dawn, Capital City Police Officer Ijaz Khan has taken notice of the incident and said that the police are working on identification of the attackers.

The report quoted Peshawar Press Club General Secretary Shahzada Fajad who explained that there was only one container for journalists to cover the rally.

An hour before Khan spoke, 60 to 70 men climbed on the container and when the media tried to turn them away, they beat them up, he said, adding that some of the individuals on the ground, also pelted journalists with stones which resulted in the injuries of seven journalists.

Additionally, one cameraperson’s camera was damaged and another fainted and lost his laptop.

The Khyber Union of Journalists condemned the attack.

Separately, a man was arrested in Peshawar on April 16 for a viral video in which he asked PTI workers to kill journalists and anchor persons who were critical of Khan, Dawn reported.

He was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by Khyber Union of Journalists President Nasir Hussain. The suspect has since appeared in another video in which he apologized for his “outburst” against the media.On April 13, 2022 photojournalists of different media outlets were misbehaved during the coverage of the public meeting of the outgoing ruling political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Peshawar.

Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Information Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif and PTI Information Secretary Zahir Shah Toru visited the Peshawar Press Club (PPC) on April 15 after a strong reaction from media organizations. They deplored the manhandling and assured us that steps would be taken to curb such incidents in the future. They also promised to provide compensation to the affected journalists, Shehzada Fahad added.

President of the Photojournalists Association, Fayyaz Aziz in a conversation with PPF strongly condemn the treatment of PTI workers with photojournalists and told PPF that they broke his camera and tried him to stop covering the jalsa. Now, the matter has been resolved.

Photojournalist of The News Muhammad Sajjad told PPF that around 50 to 60 workers of PTI attacked the media container, and dragged him and his other fellows. Workers tried to stop them from covering the meeting.

Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists has also condemned the torture of PTI activists on journalists during the Peshawar rally and demanded the party leadership to control their activists.

PFUJ President Shahzada Zulfiqar and General Secretary Nasir Zaidi, in a statement, asked the PTI leadership to take action against the culprits within 24 hours or the journalist community would announce a decision on their own, The Nation reported.
